Celebrity Make-up Artist Kevyn Aucoin

Kevyn Aucoin was one of those charmed individuals whose talent arrives early and unmistakably -- at age 11. Aucoin was considered the world’s first celebrity make-up artist. He counted Naomi Campbell, Cher, Julia Roberts and Cindy Crawford amongst his roster of celebrity clients, and while make-up was his trade, it was his affable charm and charisma that secured his fame. It all started when he would make up and pose his 6-year-old niece Carla, with near-professional results -- accompanied by a singular gift for making people feel special. Aucoin dropped out of school when he was 15. Six years later, in 1983, he travelled to New York with his companion, Jed Root.

From the time he arrived in New York in 1983 to his death, he'd styled just about every model and actress of any significance, for magazines, fashion shows, videos, events like the Oscars, and for three best-selling books, The Art of Makeup, Making Faces and Face Forward, expressing his unique aesthetic. His second book, ''Making Faces'' (Little Brown, 1997), made its debut at the No. 1 spot on the New York Times best-seller list. Adored for his personality, Aucoin also had an unparalleled influence on the beauty industry, being largely responsible for the beauty stylings of the 1990s such as Brooke Shield’s matte lips, Christy Turlington's arched brow and Cindy Crawford’s lipliner. He also launched a groundbreaking makeup line with Revlon titled The New Naked, which catered for all skin-tones, before introducing a cosmetic range under his own name in 2001. He was awarded a CFDA Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1994, and remains the only makeup artist to have received the honour.

“He would lay me down on the floor like a canvas, the way Jackson Pollock would, and begin" — Gwyneth Paltrow
