Val Garland is a high fashion and celebrity make-up artist working in London and us known for her extraordinary yet beautiful pieces of face and body art. Val grew up in Bristol, then emigrated to Sydney Australia, where she trained as a hair colourist. It was her interest in colour that led her from hair into make-up, where soon after she was a leading practitioner in Australia.

In 1994 Garland moved back to London where over the last two decades has worked on various projects ranging from highly conceptual catwalk shows for Alexander McQueen to commercial celebrity shoots with Kate Moss, as well as collaborating on publications such as Vogue, Dazed & Confused, i-D and Visionaire. Now firmly established, her innovative ideas have led her to work internationally with Nick Knight and Mario Testino, John Galliano, Chloë Sevigny and Björk. Val Garland has worked with models from Kate Moss to Georgia Jagger, made her mark on a multitude of Vogue covers and established herself with MAC as the go-to make-up artist for shows such as Vivienne Westwood and Giambattista Valli.

Val Garland: amplified realness

Creating a maxed-out version of the look she designed for Mary Katrantzou's AW14 show,

the legendary make-up artist works her magic in a new film.

Freckle Face-

“I know what Mary likes from her shows and invariably it’s fairly minimal. For the show it was really translucent and real, so for this transformation shoot I took the idea of realness and amped it up. I used a natural russet colour to give her a blush, then there’s metallic and a smudgy, grungy green like mustard. But at the end of it all it’s just freckles. I like that heightened sense of nothing and everything.”
